Modern Day Safe Tanning

We all want to have that healthy "bronze" look for summer, especially when summer clothes leave more skin exposed. By now we are all aware that too much exposure to the sun, whether sun tanning or working outdoors, can drastically and permanently damage our skin. The first step to skin damage prevention and protection is to educate yourself on how human skin is affected by the rays of the sun.

Sun Exposure and Your Skin
The sun has ultraviolet rays, UVB and UVA, that penetrate the earths atmosphere and can cause damage to skin after only a few minutes of exposure. These rays are present throughout the year but are less intense during winter months. UVB rays are the rays that cause sunburn and are most damaging at midday. The severity of the sunburn depends on the length of exposure and skin type, but the effects can usually be seen and felt after only a few hours. UVA rays are slower to cause damage because they penetrate deeper into the skin. These are the rays that accelerate aging of the skin. Some doctors say that having even one severe sunburn can drastically increase the chances of developing skin cancer years down the road.

Protection From The Suns Damaging Effects
Of course, the best protection from the sun's damaging rays is to avoid sun exposure completely. Alternatively, there are sprays and lotions specially formulated to protect skin from the suns damaging effects. A sunblock contains tiny zinc or titanium oxide crystals that protect the skin by reflecting the ultraviolet rays. Suncreens (and bronzers) contain PABA (para amino benzoic acid) which absorbs ultraviolet light which is then released as heat. Sunscreens allow tanning while avoiding damage to the skin. Each of these products is given a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating which indicates the level of protection provided by that product. For example, any product with a 15 SPF or higher is considered a sunblock, and is formulated to block 92 percent of the suns ultraviolert rays. Be sure to read product labels before choosing and follow directions for application.

More Safe Tanning Tools
Other safe ways to get that sunny glow is to use sunless tanning or self tanning lotions or bronzers. Sunless tanning lotion contain chemicals that cause a change in color to the top layer of skin. The best sunless tanning products contain the chemical dihydroxyacetone which works together with the skin's amino acids. Bronzers are available in numerous natural shades, and in both gel or powder form. A bronzer is applied like blush makeup with a brush or sponge for an even, natural look. In addition, many cosmetics now offer various levels of SPF.
