The biggest news this week has been of the tragic plane crash that involved rockers Travis Barker and DJ AM (officially known as Adam Goldstein) over the weekend. It was midnight on Friday night at Columbia Airport in South Carolina when the privately chartered Learjet carrying six passengers crashed. Travis and DJ AM were the only survivors with the pilot, co-pilot, and Travis’ bodyguard and personal assistant perishing in the crash. The crash is being described as an ‘overrun’ of the runway, and direct causes are still under investigation, but as days pass, we learn more and more about what truly saved rockers Travis and DJ AM. And it all boils down to quick thinking. A police officer on the scene of the crash states that the two men actually escaped the plane while it was engulfed in flames. At the time, they themselves were literally on fire, and they tried to tackle each other to put each other out. The police officer describes the extraordinary bravado of the two and how they made their escape:
"[Travis and Adam] told me that they slid down the wing on the right side of the plane," Lieut. Josh Shumpert of the South Congaree Police Department tells PEOPLE. Shumpert was one of the second responders at the scene – Congaree is the town outside of Columbia, S.C. – after the airport police arrived.
When Shumpert arrived on the scene, both Travis and DJ AM were pacing and in shock. DJ AM was airlifted to the Georgia burn unit, but Travis did not want to get into a flying vehicle, so he went by ground but was heavily sedated due to the extent of his burns and pain. The two are expected to make a full recovery, and since the accident, they have had to cope with the grief of the loss of their friends, as well as the extremely painful nature of burn recovery. But the two are in good hands, and the ironic twist to this may be love rekindled for both of them. Upon hearing of the crash, Travis’s ex wife, who once sang songs about their bitter divorce, rushed to his side and vows to never leave him. And this is one couple who I have always suspected just truly have no business being ‘apart’. DJ AM has felt some love as well, with long time ex-girlfriend Mandy Moore rushing to his side and serving as his sole support system. It is sad when tragedy brings people together, but right now DJ AM and Travis need all the love they can get, regardless of any history that exists between anyone. We wish Travis and DJ AM nothing but the best for a full and speedy recovery.
